Articles like this are quite disturbing. The article focuses on laughing at a young man that runs into a pole after making obscene gestures at a tracking PTZ camera but the video shows a lot more than the humorous incident. The fact that a local council is monitoring people in public is disturbing. I am all for surveillance and keeping the peace but cameras covering public streets ran by council members is a problem.
Like most, I do not feel comfortable knowing I am being monitored while walking down the street. Using scare tactics and crime statistics to deploy cameras publicly crosses the threshold of privacy and rarely does any good to actually curb crime. It opens the door to deploying more cameras to watch and monitor citizens that are simply going about their business and opens the world up to videos like this.
Cameras that are supposedly used for the prevention of crime are now being used to upload videos to the public so they may go viral and deface or embarrass a kid that was simply just walking down the street. The city council and local authorities are ok with this? I too my friend, would like to offer my middle finger to the local council and local authorities. You guys are obviously making a huge difference.
